Foundations for the Future Strategic Planning Process

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.   1 Timothy 6:18-19

In 2024, Trinity will celebrate our 250th anniversary! This is a huge milestone for our church, our denomination, and community and we are excited about marking this historic moment. As we prepare for that celebration, we want to approach this milestone with intentionality and purpose, not only by looking back to the last 250 years, but also looking forward to the next 250 years. How is God calling us into mission and ministry in this next season of our church? How can we faithfully respond, adapt, and serve God and one another? We hope this semiquincentennial celebration is not only a celebration of our past, but a bold and courageous step into our future!

In preparation for that, Trinity's Church Council launched a Strategic Planning Process entitled "Foundations for the Future."  We began this process with a church council retreat on March 25-26, 2022 led by Rev. Dr. Michelle Holmes Chaney. We started the weekend learning about our rich history and heritage, including a prayer walk to the historic sites of Trinity church! We also spent time looking at our current community and invited our council to look ahead to where Trinity can grow in the next 10 years and beyond.

After the retreat, our church council spent the next 50 days in an intentional season of prayer. We prayed for Trinity UMC, for our community and neighborhood, for the saints, past, present, and future, as well as how God is calling us next as a church in ministry and mission. We ended each time of prayer with this common prayer:

Faithful and loving God, We thank you for your guiding spirit at Trinity over the past 250 years. As you have been faithful, help us to be faithful. As we look to our future, grant us strength and courage to step into new waters, and the humility and grace to seek your will before our own. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear, for you have made them both. We pray in your holy name, Amen.

Following the retreat in the Spring of 2022, an ad hoc Strategic Planning Team was assembled, tasked with leading the Strategic Planning process. This team is made up of the following members: Jeff Lane (chair), Jen Bemisderfer, Susan Collins, Michael Cheek, Judith Andrews, Bryce Benson, Jon Hoganson, and Pastor Grace Han.

In Summer of 2022, the Strategic Planning Process will begin a process of information gathering including a congregational survey and listening sessions. As part of this process, we are asking all in our congregation to participate. Your participation will help us assess our strengths, where we can do better, how we can grow, and most importantly how we can fulfill our call to love and serve God and our community.
